Trent Hypermarket To Launch Tesco Products In India

Tata Group-promoted retail arm, Trent Hypermarket , today said it would be launching a range of food products from the basket of its joint venture company, Tesco, in India. The UK-based retailer giant, Tesco, entered into a joint venture with Trent in 2008 to provide retail expertise to the latter and help expand its hypermarket operations.

Till now, Tesco used to sell some of its FMCG products, mainly in personal-care such as shampoos, deodorants, body lotions, household cleaners and diapers, in Trent’s hypermarket chain–STAR Bazaar. However, the company will soon be selling a range of food products consisting of cereals, biscuits, juices, pasta, and snacks, initially in Mumbai and Bangalore, the company said in a release here.

“At Star Bazaar, it is our constant endeavour to provide our customers with an unmatched array of high quality products at affordable prices. With the launch of Tesco food products we bring forth international quality and unique products at great prices, thus offering a well defined value proposition to our discerning customers,” Trent Hypermarket’s CEO, Jamshed Daboo, said.

Star Bazaar currently runs seven stores in the country and plans to scale it up to 11 by the end of the year, the company had earlier said. Meanwhile, the move is strategic for both Tesco and Trent as it would boost the revenues of the Tata Group company as well as help the UK retailer expand its presence in the country.

Forever 21: The US Answer To Topshop

Forever 21 was started by enterprising Korean couple Don and Jin Chang who opened their first store in Los Angeles in 1984. Today the retailer has 460 branches and is the closest thing American teens have to Topshop – well, apart from Topshop, which recently started opening stores in the US. Originally called Fashion 21, its cheap chic was an immediate hit and by the end of the first year sales had reached $700,000 (£442,000 at current exchange rates).

The couple, who emigrated to the US from Korea in 1981, reinvested the profits, opening new stores every six months. By the mid-90s it was branching out into other states, opening its first store in Miami. A decade later the chain was clocking up 90 openings a year with outlets in Japan, Malaysia, China and the United Arab Emirates. The shops in Birmingham and Dublin will be its first in Europe.

The UK is the toughest market yet for Forever 21 as it will be going head to head with the cream of the high street from Topshop and Zara to H&M and Mango. Forever 21 may have God on its side, though, as the deeply devout founders stamp their yellow carrier bags with a Bible quote.

Hypercity Hires Former M&S Reliance CEO

Hypercity Retail, part of the CL Raheja group, said it had appointed Mark Ashman, the former chief executive of Marks and Spencer Reliance, as its new chief executive officer. Ashman will replace Andrew Levermore as the CEO who quit the HyperCity in 2008 and later joined Bharti Retail as its chief operating officer.

Ashman became the CEO of Marks and Spencer in India, when the UK retailer tied up with RIL to relaunch its Indian operations two years ago, and was instrumental in setting up the stores of M&S Reliance India.
