Google’s Sparse Approach To Online Shopping Creates A Calm Sense Of Purpose

The problem with internet shopping is that, while the choice is almost infinite, my imagination is not. I love browsing fashion blogs and e-commerce sites and can do so until the computer screen turns my eyes pink. But when it comes to actual shopping, my habits have changed little since I was 15, back in the 1980s, and first became interested in clothes.

I linger long over what I cannot afford and what I am not cool enough to wear. Then I dress myself in compromises: clothes that suit my shape, my lifestyle and my income.

An internet search lets you look everywhere for anything – which, of course, leaves you with results that are meaningless. Type “striped T-shirt” into Google and you get two million results, leading you to such bewildering destinations as Tottenham Hotspur or a shop for goths.

So when I buy online, rather than exploring the endless and exciting possibilities, I head straight for trusted destinations – Net-a-porter and Asos, for instance, just as I used to make a beeline for Next and second-hand shops in the days when I was a teenager.

Will boutiques.com make me throw off my purchase blinkers and break free of my shopping tramlines? Probably not – and the beauty is, it doesn’t aim to. There’s an exhaustive but fun set of questionnaires to discover your likes and dislikes and let Google have a stab at guessing your personal style choices. No other e-commerce site is as tailored for your needs.

If I do want inspiration, though, there are some impressive names to choose from. I love Susie Lau’s Style Bubble blog and Jane Aldridge’s Sea of Shoes, so of course I want to know which clothes they recommend. And if I happen to browse through the boutiques featuring clothes chosen by Carey Mulligan or Mary-Kate Olsen, well, that can just be between me and my sofa.

What I especially like about boutiques.com is that – while most e-commerce sites burst with editorial content, films and interviews – this one features little but pictures and product details. This sparse approach creates a calm sense of purpose.

Google is hoping that boutiques.com will change the way that people shop. With a site this good, it may do just that.

India’s Largest And The First Horizontally Designed Mall To Open In Aurangabad

After booking a fleet of high-end cars, Aurangabad is all set to witness the opening of the first phase of Prozone India’s largest and the first horizontally designed shopping mall spread over 1 million sq ft area, housing a mall, hotel and office blocks. The inauguration will be held on October 8.

“It will offer the entire Marathwada region a vast range of shopping and entertainment experiences and it will also help attract tourists,” said Nikhil Chaturvedi, managing director of Provogue and Prozone. Prozone Aurangabad, to be opened on Friday, is a joint venture of Provogue (India) Limited and Capital Shopping Centres Group Plc UK’s leading shopping centre developer, formerly known as Liberty International Plc.

“After a three-year study of the city’s demography, its youth population, industry, tourism potential and future growth prospects in the next 20 years, we chose to set up shop in Aurangabad,” said Chaturvedi. He said that after India sanctioned foreign direct investment ( FDI) into retail infrastructure sector in 2004, a number of investments and foreign partnerships happened that led to the accelerated development of shopping centres across the country.

“Most of these developments accounting for over 90 per cent investment have taken place in major metro or tier I cities. Now, the first major regional shopping and entertainment centre in a tier II city is set to be launched in Aurangabad,” Chaturvedi said. “Retail is one of the biggest drivers of GDP and it is expected to change the fortunes and lifestyle of people.

We want to explore tourism potential which we feel has not been tapped properly. The tourists come to the town, but go back as soon as they visit the World Heritage monuments at Ajanta and Ellora as there are no other attractions. If they prolong their stay by just one day, it would make a huge difference and will help the region’s GDP to grow by at least 15 per cent,” Chaturvedi said.

Chaturvedi added that Prozone would also provide good job and growth opportunities to local youths. A five-screen Satyam’ Cineplex is also part of Prozone, he said, adding that every age group will have something to explore at the mall, turning the visit into a family outing.
