British mail order company N Brown reported record half-year profits yesterday as it revealed plans to break into the American market. Sales at the big specialist retailer, which targets older and larger-size customers with catalogue brands such as JD Williams and Premier Man, have defied the recession, with profits jumping 13% to £41.8m in the six months to 29 August. Chief executive Alan White said: “The total [annual] market for the outsize customer [in the United States] is something of the order of $35bn (£22bn). So if you can get even a small share of a big market, it’s worth having.”
