start your own business and get into franchising…www.linkstaffing.com…if that doesn’t interest you, check out http://www.franchise.org
I don’t know about getting the courage but. Being a mature person with long dedicated retail experience should allow you to try for office positions. Sales other than retail i.e. cars, travel agent, real estate agent (certification is moderately priced and gets you outside),
Go back to school, part time or go for the gusto and look into loans to keep you afloat for four (or two) years of school. Only worthwhile 2 year degree is nursing or accounting. As a battle hardened adult you may find school a breeze. 3-4 hours of school 4 days a week and 3 hours of study as you choose is better than being on the clock 8hrs. Loans can pay your bills and if your making 50,000 later loans aren’t a prob.
Make your hobby your profession, what do you like, what do you want. Things work out in the end. Big risks equal big rewards. It’s your life and the only one you get, you gotta go for it.
i did retail not as long as you did; but when rumors on the branch closing started i kept thinking what am i going to do???? well i went back to school believe me at first it wasn’t all that great but in the end when i finished my ten month course its all worth it i now work in a law firm as a paralegal and i love it. think of what you really want or what you always wanted to do and do it, don’t wonder what if…
You are probably more qualified for a lot more than you realize. By now you have superb customer service skills, organizational skills, some light computer skills, and you have handled money. You may have even “designed” the floor a little bit. Also, you have longevity (stayed with the same job for so long) which really appeals to new employers. There are tons of corporate office gal jobs available to you. Or you could switch to restaurant server which makes a ton of money in a short amount of time. you may have to start at a so-so restaurant but then you would have the experience to move to a classier one. OR what about retail management? Shoot for the highest…like regional manager where you go from store to store just to check on things and boss people around!
Call the company’s Human Resouce Department, they may have something available that you can transfere to and stay with the same company. If you want to leave the company check out the newspaper or go to your local Career Link to apply for help with a new job. Good luck
First off I command you for having the courage to consider a career change in the current economic times.
The answer to this would depend upon many factors in your life. Are you married, single, the only source of income in the family?
If you want to prepare yourself you could go back to school part-time and maybe your current employer would even pay for all or part of it.
If you are just going to quit and jump into the new career I would advise you to be prepared to scale back your lifestyle to make the transition easier.
I find myself in a similar situation only I have 29 years in, a kid in collage and a 13 year old still at home.
Good Luck!
