American cult fashion shop Anthropologie opens in London

London’s fashion credentials have been given a boost with the cult US store Anthropologie opening on Regent Street.

Likened by the industry to the launch of Topshop in New York, the opening is the first for the brand in Europe. Another London store is due to open in Kings Road in the spring.

The city last month celebrated London fashion week’s 25th anniversary, which attracted designer collections including Burberry, Matthew Williamson and Pringle.

A handful of people clustered around the doors before the shop opened today, but when they were let in there was more polite browsing than a mad rush for key pieces. Anthropologie, a sister brand to Urban Outfitters, is known for unusual, quirky designs and has grown from one store in Philadelphia to 130 stores across North America. It specialises in vintage style clothes, accessories, jewellery, notebooks, decorations and homeware. The centrepiece of the London shop is a living green wall of plants that stretches over three floors.

One shopper, Diane Isaac, from London, said the prices seemed more expensive than in America.

Jenny Herb, originally from Chicago but now living in London, said: “It’s my favourite store so I’m really excited.”

James Bidwell, managing director for Anthropologie Europe, said: “London has been on the agenda for Anthropologie for some time. The synergy of London and its eclectic mix of fashion, culture and arts fits perfectly with the Anthropologie philosophy.”
