- Do your research before you buy anything - Ebay is a great place to check out the demand of a product before you buy it. If the exact item sold (consistently) on Ebay for double of what you could buy it for, then it is most likely a product worth looking into further. In other words, do not buy an item just because it “looks” like a good deal, or you may be stuck with 100 “good” deals in your basement.
- Buy in bulk - Generally, the more you buy of a product, the cheaper it will be. I could buy 1 iPod for $139, but I could buy 100 iPods for $99/each. Now, I realize you will have to start out with smaller orders, but you get the idea. Always ask how much it would cost to by 5 of X or 10 of X. This is how people can offer products for so cheap, and still make nice profit.
- Buy straight from the manufacturer when possible - I do this for one simple reason: it’s cheaper! It does make sense too, there is no middle man cutting into your profits. One of the products I sell is strollers, and I am guaranteed that nobody online or offline can buy the product for cheaper than I. That means I can make a pretty easy profit off of them (since they happen to sell well).
- Start small – Do not spread your resources too thin, but build your capital over time. This tactic will save you many headaches, and will keep you out of bankruptcy court too. By starting out small and re-investing my profits, I was able to surpass a lot of my competitors who had tried to grow too big too fast.
- Drop ship your products if possible – Drop shipping is when your supplier ships out the product for you, you just supply them with an address and the payment. I cannot tell you how much time this saves me. I would have to hire a person just to ship out orders if I did all the shipping myself. Most companies will have this service available, just ask. In fact, some of the companies I do business with; will ship my products out, without adding a drop shipping surcharge! Now, that is a win-win situation.

Research is the key. If you’re going to work with a wholesale supplier, research them first. If you’re going to use a dropshipper, research them first. Whatever you do in your business, do your research. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams online and no business can afford to fall for them, certainly not in the current climate.
And it isn’t as though it’s impossible to check out a company’s reputation. All you have to do is put them into Google.
